This has been a tremendous public/private partnership between the City of Palo Alto and the Palo Alto Library Foundation and the Friends of the Palo Alto Library. Read about the Foundation’s role at this History link.

In 2007-2008, the City of Palo Alto is gearing up to invest in the improvement of the Palo Alto City Library. And, as with the expansion of Children’s Library (completed in September 2007), the Palo Alto Library Foundation stands ready to partner with the City in this effort. Mission Statement:

The Palo Alto Library Foundation spearheads major fund-raising campaigns to bridge the gap caused by shrinking municipal budgets and the growing needs of Palo Alto's aging libraries. Working in cooperation with other library-serving organizations, we ensure that Palo Alto has sufficient financial resources to create a vibrant, modern library system that serves the diverse needs of everyone in our city -- from young to old, and from North to South.

Library News:
  • Children's library reopens September 29, 2007. ( Read all about it in our latest INKlings.)

  • The City Council has accepted the LAC recommendations to build a new library at Mitchell Park and make improvements at Main Library and the Downtown branch. College Terrace is already scheduled for a makeover in 2009.

  • Read Patty Fisher's 9/26/07 column in the Mercury News about Palo Alto libraries.
